Our Start the Conversation Program provides affordable, professional counselling services for individuals and families who face financial or systemic barriers to mental health care. Clients can access up to 12 subsidized sessions per calendar year, with the option of in-person or virtual counselling, depending on preference and therapist availability.

This program is delivered by Master’s-level therapist interns under the supervision of our Program Supervisor and Clinical Director.

    • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

    • Single Session Therapy

Do I need to prove low income?
No. We trust your need. No income verification or financial documents are required.

Who is this program for?
Anyone facing barriers to regular counselling, including:

  • Individuals or families with low/unstable income

  • Post-secondary students without mental health coverage

  • People without insurance, EAP, NIHB, or government program eligibility

  • Equity-deserving groups (LGBTQ+, BIPOC, immigrants, single parents, etc.)

  • Anyone for whom standard therapy rates are not financially feasible

How do I know if I qualify?
If financial, systemic, or coverage barriers prevent you from accessing counselling—you qualify.

Can I attend more than once?
Yes.

Who provides the counselling?
Master’s-level therapist interns, supervised by licensed mental health professionals.

What happens after 12 sessions?
You may apply for an extension, or we’ll work with you on referrals and next steps.

Can I use walk-in counselling and this program?
Yes, but not simultaneously. Walk-in is ideal for one-time support, while this program supports continuity with a dedicated therapist.

What if I miss an appointment?
Attendance is expected. Missed sessions may impact eligibility.

Will there be a waitlist?
Possibly. Limited availability means waitlists may occur, but we’ll keep you informed and provide alternatives when possible.
