What is Insomnia?
Insomnia is more than the occasional sleepless night. It is a persistent sleep disorder characterized by difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, waking too early, or experiencing non-restorative sleep that affects daily functioning. Chronic insomnia can result in fatigue, poor concentration, irritability, lowered immunity, and increased risk for depression and anxiety.
According to the Canadian Sleep Society, nearly 30% of Canadians report symptoms of insomnia, and around 10% meet the criteria for a clinical insomnia disorder.
Symptoms of Insomnia:
- Trouble falling asleep despite feeling tired
- Waking up frequently during the night
- Difficulty returning to sleep
- Early morning awakenings
- Daytime fatigue and impaired performance
The Impacts of Poor Sleep
Untreated sleep issues don’t just affect your nights—they take a serious toll on your days. Insomnia can compromise concentration, reduce work performance, impair relationships, and increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Sleep is crucial for memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and immune system function.
Chronic sleep deprivation also exacerbates mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). According to CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health), improving sleep quality is often one of the first steps toward stabilizing mood and overall well-being.
Evidence-Based Treatment: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)
At Your Counselling, our approach to treating sleep issues is rooted in the gold standard: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). Recommended by the American College of Physicians, CBT-I is a short-term, structured intervention that targets the thoughts and behaviors that disrupt sleep.
Key Elements of CBT-I:
- Sleep Hygiene: Educating clients on habits that support consistent, high-quality sleep
- Stimulus Control: Strengthening the mental association between bed and sleep
- Sleep Restriction: Limiting time in bed to consolidate and deepen sleep
- Cognitive Restructuring: Identifying and reframing distorted thoughts about sleep
- Relaxation Training: Techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, mindfulness, and progressive muscle relaxation
Clients often notice improvement in sleep within 4–8 sessions. CBT-I has shown to be more effective than sleeping pills in the long term (Harvard Health).
Common Causes of Sleep Disturbance
Insomnia rarely exists in isolation. At Your Counselling, we assess a broad range of contributing factors:
- Stress and Anxiety
- Depression or Grief
- Trauma and PTSD
- Shift Work or Irregular Sleep Schedules
- Poor Sleep Hygiene
- Substance Use or Withdrawal
- Medical Conditions (e.g., chronic pain, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea)
What to Expect at Your Counselling
Our trained therapists begin with a comprehensive sleep assessment, exploring your symptoms, routines, and health history. From there, we create a personalized treatment plan using CBT-I techniques, psychoeducation, and optional integrative supports such as mindfulness-based therapy or somatic processing.
We ensure a safe, non-judgmental space for clients to explore the root causes of their sleep disruption and learn new skills to regain control over rest.
If needed, we can collaborate with your primary care provider or sleep specialist to support continuity of care.
Online and In-Person Sleep Counselling
We offer flexible scheduling with daytime, evening, and weekend appointments. Sessions are available in person at our downtown Calgary office or virtually across Alberta, Ontario, BC, and Nova Scotia. Our therapists are licensed under the Health Professions Act of Alberta
