Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) in Calgary

Your Counselling|Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) in Calgary

Fast, Effective Trauma Relief

At Your Counselling, we understand how trauma, anxiety, and distressing memories can limit your ability to live fully in the present. If you’ve been struggling with painful past experiences, you don’t have to stay stuck in a cycle of emotional distress. Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) offers a breakthrough approach to trauma treatment—fast, effective, and evidence-based.

Our experienced therapists offer ART in Calgary and online across Alberta, Ontario, and Nova Scotia, helping clients rapidly process trauma, grief, anxiety, and more—with lasting relief.

What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a short-term, structured psychotherapy that uses a combination of techniques—including eye movements, guided imagery, and memory reconsolidation—to help individuals resolve traumatic memories and reduce emotional distress.

While ART shares some similarities with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), it is more directive and often faster, with many clients experiencing significant relief in just 1 to 5 sessions.

Developed by Laney Rosenzweig, LMFT, ART is grounded in neuroscience and focuses on how the brain stores and retrieves distressing images. By changing the way images are stored in the brain, the emotional and physiological impact of those memories can be significantly reduced or even eliminated.

How Does Accelerated Resolution Therapy Work?

ART works through a step-by-step, therapist-guided process that helps the brain “re-code” how traumatic memories are stored—without requiring clients to verbally relive every painful detail.

Key elements of the process include:

  • Voluntary Image Replacement – Clients are guided to replace distressing images associated with trauma with more positive or neutral images. This helps shift how the brain holds onto the experience.
  • Eye Movements – Following the therapist’s hand or pointer, the client uses rhythmic eye movements, which help facilitate the processing and resolution of distressing material.
  • Memory Reconsolidation – ART targets the emotional intensity tied to specific memories. Once the emotional charge is reduced, clients often report a sense of calm, clarity, and even empowerment.

One of ART’s greatest strengths is that clients maintain full control of their experience throughout the session. The therapist facilitates the process in a structured and compassionate way, but the client decides what to explore and when to stop.

What Can Accelerated Resolution Therapy Help With?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy has been successfully used to treat a wide range of mental health concerns, including:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Anxiety and Panic Attacks
  • Grief and Loss
  • Depression
  • Phobias
  • Childhood Trauma
  • Abuse and Assault Recovery
  • Sleep Disturbances
  • Obsessive Thoughts
  • Stress-related Disorders
  • Relationship Trauma

Many individuals who have “tried everything” report significant progress with ART, even when other therapies have had limited results.

What to Expect in an Accelerated Resolution Therapy Session

At Your Counselling, our therapists are certified in ART and trained to provide a safe, structured, and supportive environment. A typical session may include:

  • Preparation and Grounding

Your therapist will begin by explaining the ART process and making sure you’re comfortable and ready. You’ll identify a specific issue or memory you wish to work on.

  • Targeting the Distressing Image

Without needing to share all the details aloud, you’ll be asked to focus on the internal imagery and physical sensations tied to the memory or emotion.

  • Eye Movement Processing

Using smooth, back-and-forth hand movements, your therapist will guide you through eye movements while you access the memory. This helps the brain “de-link” the emotional intensity from the image.

  • Voluntary Image Replacement

Once the emotional intensity is reduced, you will be guided to replace distressing images with more empowering or calming ones.

  • Closure and Review

Each session ends with grounding techniques and a review of your experience. You’ll leave feeling clearer, lighter, and in control.

Who Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy For?

ART is suitable for adults, teens (12+), and older children who are experiencing emotional distress tied to specific events or memories. It can be especially helpful for those who:

  • Have experienced trauma but do not want to revisit it in detail
  • Feel “stuck” in therapy and are seeking breakthrough results
  • Experience high anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or emotional triggers
  • Want a faster and more focused therapy approach

A comprehensive intake will help determine if ART is the right fit for your needs.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy vs. Traditional Talk Therapy

While talk therapy can be profoundly helpful for self-reflection, insight, and long-term support, ART offers a different route—rapid symptom relief through focused, brain-based processing.

Traditional Talk Therapy Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
Insight-oriented Solution- and image-oriented
Weekly, open-ended process Brief, structured sessions
Verbal processing required Minimal verbal sharing needed
Often gradual improvement Rapid symptom reduction

For many clients, ART can be a powerful complement to ongoing therapy or serve as a standalone intervention.
